Summary
This session addresses the challenges and opportunities in educating and supporting youth about sexual health with a focus on STIs. We will share current misconceptions shared by youth in the community and use the information to guide our time together. Participants will explore practical ways to reduce stigma and how to use positive youth development strategies to engage the adolescents they serve. Through a person-centered approach and behavior theory, the session aims to equip educators and other professionals with tools to promote informed decision making, risk reduction, and values-based conversations with youth.

- Common misconceptions youth have about STIs
- Effective communication techniques rooted in positive youth development, that reduce stigma and promote healthy decision-making
- Behavior change theory and person-centered approaches that support safer sex behaviors and values-based decision-making resulting in STI reduction
Presenters
Khadijah Cooper
Director of Education, Annex Teen Clinic
Khadijah brings over 10 years experience implementing community-driven and inclusive education programming for young people, parents/caregivers, and professionals. As a leader in the health and education fields, she is committed to pushing forward the values of public health while cultivating an environment where everyone feels seen and heard. Khadijah was recognized as a Local Public Health Hero by the Minneapolis Health Department in 2022.
Lauren Lenzen
Sexuality Educator, Annex Teen Clinic
Lauren supports young people as they learn who they are and how to care for their health. A passionate educator with 20 years of experience, she is completing a bachelor of science degree in public health education from St. Catherine University. She regularly speaks on a wide range of sexuality topics, including principals of positive youth development, so caregivers and youth-serving professionals can support healthy adolescent sexuality.
