Understanding this Tool 

Youth have incredible questions! In this companion material to Human Growth and Development During Pregnancy and Early Fetal Development through Ultrasound, there is medically accurate, age-appropriate information and examples of how to answer some common questions youth ask about pregnancy and related topics. All information has been reviewed by an interdisciplinary team of medical providers, social workers, and youth workers.  

It’s impossible to anticipate all questions that will come up about this broad topic. Here are a few things to keep in mind when responding to questions:  

  • It’s important to answer questions with medically accurate information and encourage young people to explore their values around that information with their parents, caregivers, and trusted adults.
  • Don’t know the answer? Own it!  Human development is a vast topic, and it’s common that those responsible for covering the material are not experts themselves. Young people respect adults who acknowledge when they don’t know the answer. When an adult responds honestly in the moment, researches the answer, and circles back to respond later, they are demonstrating that they are reliable and trustworthy.   
  • The internet can be a great tool for finding information, but it can be difficult to identify the best resources quickly.  Below is a list of topics that young people often ask about when reproduction and pregnancy are discussed.  You can reach out to HCET staff members with additional questions or topics at communications@hcet.org.
