Choose 3 Vital Signs

There are several reasons why some people might be hesitant or refuse to get on the scale at a doctor’s office, and understanding this can be important within the context of trauma-informed care:

  1. Body Image Issues: For individuals struggling with body image or self-esteem issues, stepping on a scale can be a stressful experience that exacerbates these feelings.
  2. Eating Disorders: People with eating disorders may find weighing particularly triggering. The focus on weight can reinforce unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns associated with their condition.
  3. Past Trauma: Individuals who have experienced trauma related to physical abuse, sexual abuse, or other forms of control may associate the act of being weighed with feelings of powerlessness or being judged.
  4. Privacy Concerns: Some might feel that their weight is a private matter and feel uncomfortable sharing it, especially in potentially non-confidential environments.
  5. Fear of Judgment or Discrimination: Weight stigma in healthcare is a significant concern, as individuals may fear judgment, shaming, or receiving lower-quality care based on their weight.
  6. Anxiety and Stress: For some, medical settings already evoke anxiety or stress, and being weighed can amplify these feelings, especially if they are concerned about their health or the implications of their weight on treatment options.

Empowering patients is a cornerstone of trauma-informed care. By offering the option to choose three vital signs for their visit and possibly skipping the scale, you show respect for their comfort and autonomy. This approach can significantly reduce anxiety, especially for those with a history of body image or weight-related trauma. Your commitment to transparency and patient comfort, where weight is discussed only if necessary, builds trust and promotes a supportive environment.

Additionally, providing these materials in Spanish and Haitian Creole ensures that your diverse patient community feels included and understood, reflecting your dedication to accessibility and patient-centered care.
